As one of the best known of the UK automobile associations the AA has a history and reputation which goes back to 1905, when it was originally set-up to assist drivers in avoiding police speed traps! As the movement began to move forward, the famous AA handbook was first published in 1906 to the delight of those looking for assistance and advice about the roads of the UK, with AA route maps introduced between 1910 and 1929. By 1914 the AA had a membership of some 83,000 people – nothing short of a miracle in the early 1900s – and the animal which we know so well today was well on the move.
Famous for their breakdown and recovery service, 1949 saw the first official “roadside rescue” and while it was initially restricted to the London area it was soon rolled out across the whole of the UK.
