The History Of The Jaguar Group
As with so many of the older British car manufacturers, the history of Jaguar is has been fairly volatile and while there was much disappointment when the company attracted the attention of overseas predators, it has finally ended up in the hands of the Ford Motor Company. As seems so common in the car market, Jaguar originally started out as a motorcycle manufacture in 1922, quickly moving onto luxury cars with the appearance of the first major seller back in 1935. However it was not until the 1950s that the company made a real name for itself in the luxury / sports car area – something which they have retained to this day.
Interestingly it was Jaguar who acquired the Daimler brand in the 1950s, something which they used to the fullest extent to broaden their popularity. However, after a merger with the British Motor Corp in 1966, and a further partnership with British Leyland, the group left itself open to financial difficulties. While Jaguar was performing well, other parts of the enlarged group were not and after a restructuring in the 1980s the Jaguar name was acquired by Ford Motors in 1990. As this moment in time it appears that Ford is looking to offload the brand but there has been no definite news as yet.
