Along with the AA (Automobile Association) the RAC (Royal Automobile Club) is one of the leading lights in the UK transport industry offering a range of services to their large member base. Created back in 1897 the RAC has been at the cutting edge of breakdown recovery in the UK as well as an ambassador to the UK motor racing industry with the first RAC sponsored TT (Tourist Trophy) race held back in 1905. Originally a mutual society, the RAC Club was converted into a PLC in the mid 1990s and subsequently sold for £1.1 billion to Lex Services.
Under the stewardship of Lex Services the range of service was expanded to include car insurance, windscreen repairs, learning driving (through the acquisition of the British School of Motoring), RAC direct insurance (including the likes of home and travel insurance), RAC legal services, RAC loans and a whole host of other services which have proved very popular with their membership. While the RAC found a useful skill in cross-selling under the ownership of Lex Services they have since been sold on to Aviva Group for around £1.1 billion.
The move to the Aviva Group has been a god send for the business, increasing investment, broadening the services available and partnering the business with the insurance giant Norwich Union. Again, cross selling was the major attraction for Aviva acquiring the business, milking yet more from a loyal customer base who have shown a readiness and willingness to consider and use the vast array of service put in front of them.
